Industry

India faces severe environmental degradation in which solid waste is a major contributor. Paper use and disposal is growing at a rapid rate causing large amount of wastage of paper. While reuse of paper has severe limitations, the recycling potential is endless and yet untapped.

Paper Recycling

There is a huge potential to facilitate and support individuals and small groups to solve this issue of recycling of waste paper. Stuck in low value-added activities, micro-enterprise owners and workers generally face challenges with regard to:

  • Financing
  • Poor technology
  • Producing goods that are competitive in supply chains (because of lack of standardization in product quality and design aspects)

Opportunity and Market Assessment

With a growing concern for the environment and increased focus of the government as well the private sector to use green or environment friendly products there is enough pull in the market to produce and sell eco- friendly paper and products.

Given this opportunity and the need to recycle urban waste, there is a huge potential to facilitate and support individuals and small groups in setting up small and medium enterprises that recycle waste. In the space of urban waste management there lies a great opportunity to recycle paper and other paper based waste given the huge quantities of this waste.

According to initial market assessments conducted by the team enterprises currently working in the paper recycling space have not been successful owing to the following reasons:

  • Producing goods that are competitive in supply chains (because of lack of standardization in product quality and design aspects)
  • Lack of awareness of market opportunities, in urban India
  • Exploitation by middlemen, as the only means of access to distant markets due to lack of business approach & skills

These enterprises have therefore not been able to sustain profitably for a longer time. Based on these existing gaps in the market, we aim to provide support to these entrepreneurs by providing them scalable and sustainable solutions and convert him to a successful i-G Preneur.

Technology Description

Wastes that can be recycled to produce paper include fiber based waste (cotton, denim, jute), packaging waste (cartons, tetra packs) and waste paper.

The technologies that can be used for recycling this waste to produce paper include Dipping, Vat, and Cylinder Mould. The main point of differentiation for handmade paper technology is the process used to lay out pulp into sheets.

The waste needs to be processed to produce fine quality recycled paper. Each of these raw materials needs to be processed differently, according to size, colour and physical properties of the paper that needs to be produced. Each of these imparts a different texture and characteristic to the paper sheet. Producing paper by recycling waste therefore involves both skill and technology.
